Jason, it's so important you're writing to men. (But I'll read it too - there's value for everyone.)

I can see how a tragedy ... followed by a tragedy ... would lead you, or anyone, to become hypervigilant; how could it not?

The same applies to folks who have survived abuse (trust me), but I'm certain that the stress you describe, here and throughout your Substack page, is far more intense than anything I've been through. You have a lot of courage. Keep going.

Thank you brother. I appreciate that.

What I find fascinating is that I spent close to fifteen years being unaware of how much fear was influencing my daily experience.

I've done a lot of work with first responders and I always imagined hyper-vigilance as the cop who won't sit with their back to the door or who is always scanning their environment for threats.

Looking at it that way, made it hard for me to see in myself. It took me experiencing true calm to realize how far from that I normally operate.

And yes, it definitely applies to people who have suffered abuse. Imagine your trust being violated by someone you is supposed to keep you safe. It's no wonder that experiences like that could lead to someone always searching for a threat.

Thanks for your kind words. I appreciate you reading and your regular comments. I love hearing other people's perspectives. ❤️

It's interesting that you say it took you experiencing true calm to realize how vigilant you've been. To that end, I'm going to research Somatic Experiencing as a possible avenue. Thank you for mentioning that.
